A BIG THANK YOU................
A big thank you to all the candidates, members and supporters who worked so hard to help us work to keep control in Kirklees. The result left us one seat short of a majority, a result that the little Scottish woman, in another place on the same night, described as amazing.Though the national media work to turn local elections into nothing more than an opinion poll on how we are interpreting their spin, we locally know what difference the results can make to the people we represent. The Conservatives are not only the party with no moral standing (that goes without saying) they also, locally offer a recipe for financial bankruptcy for Kirklees with a bizarre economic view that chooses to ignore the cuts imposed by their government. Whilst the Lib/Dems do more jumping than Mexican Beans from one band-wagon to another.
The result left us to face another two years one vote short of a majority. Labour 34, Tories 20, Lib/Dem 9, Green 3 and independents 3. Though on the day we did win a majority of the seats 12 -11.
We know that it is not, to quote Charlie "The Best of Times", we know that we will have to make difficult decisions over the next two years, at the AGM the Council the Labour Group will offer an administration that is willing to protect those we represent from the worse excesses of the Conservative Government, whilst at the same time offering an economic vision for Kirklees that give us the best chance of avoiding the economic collapse that many councils face.
So thank you, all that have been involved in giving us that chance.
