Jo Cox Parliamentery Question Sure Start

Jo Cox ;  Labour, Batley and Spen

Cuts to council funding—the abolition of a series of grants and credits by the coalition—mean that Sure Start centres in my constituency are providing more basic services than ever before. I am hearing now of children in Kirklees coming to centres on a Monday morning having not had a hot meal since the previous Friday, yet Sure Start budgets in the north of England have been cut by 39%. Does the Minister share my assessment, and that of the London School of Economics and the Centre for Analysis for Social Exclusion, that even the most dedicated of Sure Start children’s centres will not be able to withstand further cuts?

You can view the answer (for what its worth) here

Birstall and Batley markets

Birstall and Batley Markets Continue

Kirklees Council confirmed today that an agreement has been reached with a private operator which will secure the future of markets in Birstall and Batley.

Speaking about the deal which will grant private market operator Peter McNulty a license to hold markets in both towns after the council’s operation ends on 31st March, Cllr Peter McBride, Lead Member for Investment and Housing said:

“I’m pleased to say that we’ve found a solution which means that Batley and Birstall will continue to have a weekly market.  As our residents are aware, the council has had to make tough decisions about where we continue to provide essential provide services.  But as this shows, with a bit of creative thinking, where a council service has come to an end, this has in fact created a commercial opportunity for a local business, as well as securing the future for existing market traders who are keen to continue.”

The new deal will see Mr McNulty operate markets in both towns for the next 12 months in much the same way as previous markets.  Market days will remain the same, and existing stall holders who wish to continue will be able to do so with a minimal adjustment of less than 20p to weekly stall prices.  The initial agreement is for a period of 12 months, but is likely to be extended if the markets are a success.

Cllr McBride added:

“We’re delighted that Mr McNulty has stepped forward and seized the opportunity to put these markets onto a more commercial footing - as I’m sure are the local residents who enjoy shopping there, and the traders who make their living there.  Finding new ways of delivering services will be a continuing challenge for us in the months and years to come; but this goes to show that the end of council funding certainly doesn’t mean the end of valued services and activities.”

Kirklees Council has written to all affected traders to confirm details of future operations, and invites new traders interested in the new market to contact Mr McNulty direct.
Council Leader, David Sheard added "Despite dire predictions from Conservative Councillors who see no other way than spending council money a solution has been found that means the Markets continue without Council subsidy. This is a much more secure future for the Markets as the Conservative solution would see them under threat year on year as the Pickles attack on the North of England continues.

Libraries Markets Typo

A small mistake in the Reporter Group Newspapers, but a big difference, whilst there is a Labour proposal to close loss making markets in Batley and Birstal, there is no proposal to close Batley or Birstal Libraries.

OUTSOURCING

What Robert Light wants for Kirklees.

He constantly asks for the powwer to award contracts for local services. If he had his way, we would now be facing a situation where we had to make massive cuts, but they would have to be from the services not contracted out to the conservatives capitalist friends

New Labour Candidate Selected for Birstall, Birkenshaw and East Bierley

Dathan Tedesco was this week selected to be Labour's candidate in next May’s local elections for Birstall, Birkenshaw and East Bierley.

He won the selection by a majority of votes at the packed-out meeting held in Birstall. Dathan is an experienced political campaigner who has been an integral part of many successful campaigns.  In 2012 he was elected campaign co-ordinator for Kirklees Labour Party, a vote taken by all four parliamentary constituencies in Kirklees (Batley & Spen, Colne Valley, Dewsbury and Huddersfield).

He has run his own graphic design and print company since 2012, which gives him the flexibility to spend whatever time he needs meeting local residents and taking up their issues.

After being selected Dathan said:

"It's a great honour to represent the Labour Party in Birstall, Birkenshaw and East Bierley and I can't wait to get out there and listen to the concerns local people have.

"This area is suffering heavily from Conservative/Lib Dem cuts which are as much as eight times higher than those in more affluent councils down south.  Many of our services and facilities have closed or will close thanks to this disproportionate attack on Kirklees council.

"Many of these are services that elderly, disabled and less fortunate people rely on. And they are being diminished in the context of the top 1% in our country becoming many times richer while the poorest and most needy are getting ever poorer.

"The "success" of our Food Bank in Batley is a sign that local people are really struggling just to get by.

"The three Conservative councillors in Birstall, Birkenshaw and East Bierley cannot distance themselves from the decisions of their friends in Westmister. The politics of this government are based on breaking up public services regardless of the impact on local communities.

"It's really important at this time that local people have good representatives who will make sure the impact of the cuts are managed in the best possible way, by people who actually believe in local services and local government."

Image via Wikipedia
A brilliant story in the local news today.

Oakwell Hall will be given a major revamp after being awarded more than £250,000.

The Elizabethan manor house will improve its visitor facilities thanks to an Arts Council England award.
The £257,289 has been awarded by the Renaissance Strategic Support Fund from Arts Council England for the ‘Growing Oakwell: Beyond the Business Plan’ project.

Cllr Jean Calvert said: “The grant is a great tribute to Oakwell Hall’s long tradition of innovation and creative thinking.”

Mike Wood MP - standing down, not winding down

Mike Wood was first elected for the West Yorkshire constituency at the 1997 election.

In 2010, he retained the seat for Labour with a majority of 4,406 over the Conservative candidate.

Mr Wood said it had been a difficult decision but after 18 years as an MP he believed the "time was right".
The Labour MP for Batley and Spen has confirmed he will not stand for Parliament at the next General Election.

You can read Mike's comments in the full BBC article.
