Kirklees Labour Cllr Viv Kendrick, Heckmondwike ward, has been asked by local residents that their homes should be
considered for installation of solar panels. "I am happy to pass on their
request and will be pressing the council to make an allocation to Heckmondwike,
anything we can do to help with household finances in these difficult times is
worth doing"
Funded by the Housing Revenue Account (not the rates), as part of the councils target for carbon emission reduction, the council is to fit solar panels to a number of council houses, sharing the benefits with the tenants. The tenant will get the free electricity they create and the council will get the income from the power fed to the National Grid, this will pay the council back for the installation costs.
As the council workers are accredited installers for solar panels this scheme has the added benefit of providing jobs to our local workforce.
This carbon reduction scheme follows on from the "Warm Zone" scheme where loft and cavity wall insulation was fitted free to thousands of private houses within Kirklees, again providing the double benefit of saving residents money and helping towards the fight against global warming.
