Travellers
Yes I know the subject is controversial and will raise strong feeling but that does not mean we can ignore it.
I am sure all areas have
all “suffered” from Travellers at some time, though it does seem at the moment
that Heckmondwike and Liversedge seem to be suffering much more than our fair
share.
This week I had a
scheduled meeting with the Police and Crime Commissioner (I can’t stop thinking
of Gotham City every time I hear that) and I took the opportunity to raise the
issue with him, though we do need to raise it with the Chief Constable who
makes operational decisions.
Mark did explain
that the last government (the coalition) were considering to make occupation a
criminal offence, but for some reason they decided to back off.
We now have the situation,
which however much we try to protect sites, travellers can smash locks and
barriers to gain access and no action is taken against them. It does seem to
appear that the Police, even where there is clear evidence will not take action.
Mark explained
that Leeds were trying a new initiative and promised to send me details. He did
say he would welcome a West Yorkshire Wide Policy, I said I would take this up
with the other West Yorkshire Leaders.
Our options are restricted and expensive. the Officers involved do a great job with both hands tied
behind their backs.
I know the issue
is complicated but we can’t go on as we are I am afraid that I see no way forward until the Government grasp the nettle and change the law.
