Just £1 spent on North East transport for every £9 spent in London

Just £1 is spent on transport in the North East for every £9 that goes to London, new official figures have shown.

The latest Government public spending figures show that the North East still loses out on money for roads and railways while London gets a far bigger share of transport cash than it should, based on population size.

Newcastle upon Tyne East MP Nick Brown said: “This is grotesquely unfair. The Government should allocate a transport budget to each English region, so that regions like ours are not always at the back of the queue with London getting the lion’s share of the funding. If the Northern Powerhouse is to mean anything, the Government should focus on transport links in the northern regions and allocate money specifically to them. Otherwise it is all talk.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on Friday out plans for a “Bank of the North” to ensure every part of the north of England receives investment. And he said his plans would help created 100,000 additional well-paid, secure jobs across the North East.
