HECKMONDWIKE BUS STATION

HECKMONDWIKE BUS STATION

For many years there has been a desire for a bus station in Heckmondwike, there were proposals to build one where McDonalds now  sits or on the “Pavilion” site, or even squeezed onto the triangle of land in front of McDonalds. Bus stops on the street held up traffic and for those not regular bus users caused confusion, so when the idea to pull down the George and the buildings behind was suggested, our Labour Councillors were all keen.

The original idea was before the Bankers Greed crashed the economy and included a combined Library and bus station. Unfortunately one property owner delayed the build by forcing the council to start compulsory purchase proceedings. By the time the land had been acquired the money for the Library was no longer available, to make matters worse, as we were not building the Library, Metro pulled the funding for the bus station.

We must thank Labour Councillor Eric Firth who has a member of Metro joined with local members in securing funding for the current bus hub.

We still need a new Library, and any extra facilities at the Bus Hub will always be welcome.
