TURNING STREET LIGHTS GREEN
No we are not fitting green lights, what we are doing is reducing carbon emissions, and our electric bill by converting street lights to LED.
Of the 52,392 lights we own we have now converted 9,000 that is 17%. We are working on a program of conversion and night time switch off (during hours when folk are not about). We would really like to remove some street lights totally, lights installed on unoccupied lanes that were installed at a time when some authorities were bragging about the number of street lights they had. Unfortunately the more than generous deal given to the private companies when our power companies were given away - ironic in that most were set up by local authorities who were not compensated by the government when they were privatised, I missed the bit where money was transferred to local government when they were sold by central government - allows them to charge a ridiculous amount (about £300) to disconnect each light, money we don't have, so we have to continue paying them exorbitant rates.
