Cameron offers “right to buy” to 1.3m
Some 1.3m
families will be given the chance to buy their housing association homes at a
discount under a new ‘right to buy’ scheme to be unveiled by the prime minister
today. The offer will be funded by compelling councils to sell off thousands of
their most expensive properties as they become vacant from 2016, raising £4.5bn
a year, or £18bn by the end of the parliament.
David Cameron is expected
to say today that: “Conservatives have dreamed of building a property - owning
democracy for generations…the next Conservative government will extend the right to buy to all housing
association tenants in this country.”
The plans will mean that housing
association tenants will be entitled to discounts of up to £102,700 in London
and £77,000 across the rest of England. There are also plans to create a
£1bn Brownfield Regeneration Fund to open the way for the construction of
400,000 homes over the next parliament.
The National Housing Federation is
opposed to extending the right to buy policy because of the difficulty of
replacing homes. Since 2012 fewer
than half the properties sold under right to buy have been replaced.
