Living Wage

Last night at the Council Meeting (Kirklees) the Labour Group put a proposition to the Council that it should move as soon as possible to paying its employees no less than the Living Wage. The Living wage is an amount calculated as that needed to live at a minimum standard in the UK, as opposed to the Minimum Wage set by the Government. The Government take on advice on the level of the minimum wage from the Low Pay Commission. The Low Pay Commission decided that the minimum wage should increase, their total "sell out" decision was that for the first rise in five years the rise should be 2% - in real terms  a massive cut.

At the Council the Labour Group proposition was supported by the Liberal Democrats, The Green Party and the Valley Independents. The Conservatives obviously believing their budget cutting the Bingo Tax for Bingo Hall Owners, knocking a penny off a pint and giving everyone the right to buy a Lamborghini with their pension pot, had done enough to help those on low pay, put forward a wrecking amendment which was defeated, they then voted against the motion.

This is a statement of intent for the council, we now have to do all we can to ensure it becomes a reality.
