St John’s Church Birkby fundraising Dance

On Saturday 26th October, St John’s Church in Birkby held its annual fundraising dance at St Pat’s Catholic Centre. The church is raising funds to help renovate the east wing. The historic stained glass window needs vital repairs to stop it from falling out and the Birkby church was awarded £145,000 Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) cash to help save its crumbling east wing.

It follows a theft in 2008 when its steeple was accidentally toppled in a 3am scrap metal raid. Thieves tried to rip the copper lightning strip off the side of the Grade II listed building by tying a rope to it and attempting to tug it down using their car. But it ended up bringing the top part of the church's 150ft steeple crashing down with falling masonry smashing large holes through the church roof

The dance was attended by the Deputy Mayor Cllr Ken Smith & Cllr Christine Smith as well as ward Councillors Sokhal and Hughes.
