Cllr Jean Calvert cleared of breaking the law

On 20 January 2014, Cllr Jean Calvert was cleared by a district judge of breaking the law, in relation to the Local Government Finance Act 1992.

She was cleared emphatically, with the court ruling that evidence showed she could not have known she was breaking the law.
Cllr Calvert stated: “I am delighted at the verdict and relieved to be cleared of any wrongdoing. I was confident I had acted in good faith all the way through. I wish it had not come as far as this trial, but I feel that justice has now been done.”
Cllr Mehboob Khan, Leader of the Council, commented, “I said throughout this process that I believed in the principle of innocent until proven guilty, and she has been found not guilty. As such, I'm pleased that Jean will be able to continue the excellent job she is doing working hard for the people of Kirklees."
