*Cllr Cathy Scott today seconded her Dewsbury East ward colleague, Cllr Paul Kane, to the position of Mayor of Kirklees. Below is her speech, delivered on this proud occasion*
"I have often heard him described as tenacious or bombastic, but I prefer to think of him as passionate, determined, caring and resilient; he will give 100% to ensure he has delivered the best job he can.
"I’m delighted to
have the honour of seconding Cllr Kane for the mayoralty. Paul has contributed a lot over the years and
undertaken many roles since becoming a councillor for Dewsbury east in 1994.
"Brought up in
Chickenley, proud of his family, roots and heritage, life was not easy. You had to fight for what you believed in and
shout to be heard. This was the early training ground for Paul, one which has
made him a good Champion of the communities he represents.
"Often known to
quote “not to accept second best”, Paul can be very proud of his achievements
so far for the town of Dewsbury. We know there is more to come from Paul, now
beyond the boundaries of Dewsbury and across the whole of Kirklees.
"Paul has stepped
into many roles as a councillor; he was Chair of the first Area Committee in
the whole of Kirklees, leading the way one year before the other committees
came into existence; he has Chaired the Heavy Woollen Planning committee for 11
years and has also chaired the National Association of Councillors for 3 years.
"Paul always has projects
in the pipe line and has become increasingly determined, with a growing and special
interest in Health and Health service delivery.
"Paul demonstrated this
determination when he returned to education at the age of 34 and qualified as a
building surveyor. His can do attitude should be an example to us all,
particularly during these austere times.
"I know Paul is
proud of the Mayoralty and would look to support some smaller as groups as well
as Diabetes UK. He can be very straight talking; but at least
you know where you are with him; he doesn’t take umbrage and welcomes debate
and constructive challenge.
"I have often heard him described as tenacious or bombastic, but I prefer to think of him as passionate, determined, caring and resilient; he will give 100% to ensure he has delivered the best job he can.
"Paul is a proud
man and I’m certain he is humbled by this occasion.
"Paul, this is just
another part of your journey. Congratulations!"
