National Highway Survey

The State of our Roads

The Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance Survey was published on the 3rd of April, unfortunately it did not get the coverage it deserved.The National findings were as follows;
Estimated back-log of repairs per authority

  •   Estimated back-log of repairs per authority                          £90m
  •   Estimated time needed to clear back-log                              12 years
  •   Annual average budget shortfall per authority                        £5.1m
  •   Frequency of road surfacing (all classes)                                68 years

To compare that with Kirklees is difficult as most authorities have nowhere as many roads as Kirklees, we have 1891 km of roads and unfortunately a large proportion of out roads suffer from severe weather conditions due to hight above sea level.A London authority for example might have 10% of the roads we have, and no adverse weather conditions But, given the above caveats the picture for Kirklees is as follows;

  •    Estimated back-log of repairs                                                      £75m
  •   Estimated time needed to clear back-log                                      10 years
  •   Kirklees budget shortfall                                                              £9.5m
  •   Frequency of road surfacing (all classes)                                     82 years

As you will see we are rapidly approaching the point where must consider closing some roads to vehicles.
