We are now entering one of the most crucial periods ever in local government history. As a result of the savage, brutal cuts by the Conservative/Lib Dem Coalition Government, Kirklees Council is facing cuts of millions upon millions of pounds to their budget.
The Government are doing this knowing full well that it threatens peoples jobs, that it could impact heavily on front line services provided to older and younger people, throughout Kirklees. The cuts are focused on Northern Councils and are not based on the needs of residents, but on a political agenda of cutting budgets in poorer areas and shifting resources to wealthy Tory areas.
The Kirklees Labour Group recognise that the strength of getting through these times is to pull together, speak with and listen to the communities the length and breadth of Kirklees, which is why they endorse the approach being taken by the Council.
This approach is to undertake a two phase consultation with the public.
Phase 1 is an initial consultation about the broad principles underpinning the budget options. They are asking people to get involved and express their views on these areas. You can also make any other comments about the budget, or put forward ideas for doing things differently. This first phase of consultation starts on Monday 8th September and will run for four weeks, closing on Friday 3rd October.
